    Beskrivelse

    Why SFL and Language Education?
In choosing this as the theme of the congress we would like to invite SFL researchers within well-established and evolving lines of inquiry to reconsider or reconnect with traditional applications and also to contemplate novel applications of the theory to Language Education in ways that can further enhance our understanding of Language Education and improve our language education practices, while, at the same time, fostering the development of the theory along well-established and new directions. There is a long tradition of intensive and fruitful exchange between SFL and Language Education, inspiringly chronicled by M. A. K. Halliday, Ruqaiya Hassan, Frances Christie and Len Unsworth in recent retrospective articles. Some recent regional conferences have also explored the theme of Literacy in relation to grammar and to discourse, both verbal and multisemiotic. Still the theme seems appropriate for an international conference to be held in Latin America, where Language Education and Literacy development continue to pose challenges that demand a permanent renewal of connections between theory and practice.
