Jeg er i redaktionsgruppen for et temanummer i Nordisk barnehageforskning: Early Childhood Education and Care in Migration Societies.Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) institutions are at the forefront of responding to the growing complexities of Nordic societies. This call invites contributions that critically examine how ECEC settings can evolve to meet the needs of children, families, and professionals in multicultural and multi-religious contexts.
Bakcground
Increasing migration across Nordic countries brings both significant opportunities and complex challenges for local and national communities. People move across national, linguistic, and cultural boundaries for various reasons—including seeking asylum, employment, family reunification, or education—often for different durations and with varying degrees of connection to their countries of origin. This results in increasingly diverse and dynamic local populations, which can complicate efforts to ensure equitable access to education.
In this era, shaped by increasing mobility and globalization, Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) institutions are encountering new and complex societal contexts. These underscores the urgent need to cultivate ECEC environments that are inclusive for children, families, and staff alike.
This special issue invites contributions that explore how critical cultural awareness can be developed and applied within Nordic ECEC settings. Critical cultural awareness is essential for ECEC professionals, encompassing the ability to navigate cultural encounters with sensitivity to power relations, discrimination, and the transformative potential of diverse perspectives.

We welcome papers that explore the role of ECEC in fostering belonging and inclusion through everyday practices—such as meals, play, storytelling, and material selection—and how these can either reinforce or challenge dominant norms. Special attention is given to the development of critical cultural awareness among ECEC staff, including their ability to navigate cultural differences, address power dynamics, and promote democratic values from an early age.
This issue seeks to highlight both theoretical and empirical perspectives in Nordic ECEC settings, including:
Analyses of children’s cultural practices and interethnic play
Applications of sociological and pedagogical theories
Strategies for inclusive interaction among children, parents, and staff
The role of ECEC institutions as community meeting points and local network hubs
We particularly encourage submissions that bridge theory and practice, offering insights into how ECEC professionals can be equipped to support diverse communities and contribute to the vision of a more inclusive society.
