    Beskrivelse

This paper reports on an educational research and development project in progress: Semantic Waves and Linguistic Snails, the aim of which is to make science lessons in the middle-grades (grades 4-6) more accessible to all students and additional language learners, in particular, by introducing the involved teachers to the notion of semantic waves from Legitimation Code Theory (Macnaught et al., 2013; Maton, 2014) and the systemic functional linguistics-based pedagogic model known as the register og snail-model (Derewianka, 1990; Halliday & Matthiessen, 2014; Mulvad, 2016).
The intervention-aspect of the project is closely embedded in the context of the teachers’ instruction, taking the point of departure in three science units from the school year 2021-22: 1. Sailing, floating and sinking 2. Hearing and sound, and 3. Sprouting.
Through close collaboration between teachers and teacher-educators, the three science units were planned, observed and reflected on to inform the science and linguistic goals in the following lessons and unit. Planning of each unit was informed through ideational analysis of the teaching chosen materials, while the lesson observations were analyzed using semantic gravity (Maton, 2014). The analyses of these form the point of departure for reflectional discussions with the teachers, and the presentation of the project in this paper.
