Abstract

The following paper offers a short introduction to my PhD project; the purpose, the theoretical framework, research questions and methodological reflections. The project is interdisciplinary drawing on theories on intercultural reflexivity, cultural studies and critical literacy. It is inspired by participatory action research and it explores how three experienced English teachers work with the intercultural dimension in their teaching and how they experiment with the intercultural dimension in two interventions over a period of nine months in the school year 2013-2014.The research focus is on the professional development of the involved teachers. My role as a researcher is that of a consultant who frames the teaching and guides the teachers when they experiment with cultural studies, discourse analysis and intercultural reflexivity. Visual media such as YouTube, Facebook & blogs and the Council of Europe’s Autobiography of Intercultural Encounters through Visual Media form the basis of the texts and media used in the interventions. All classes are audio- and videotaped, teachers are interviewed prior to and after the interventions and students are interviewed in focus groups. The teachers participate in workshops prior to each intervention. The thesis explores if it is possible to educate and collaborate with teachers in such a way that they change perspective from a primarily solid and essentialist view of EFL culture pedagogy to a more liquid, non-essentialist and critical approach. The teachers must be willing to risk and explore new ways of teaching. This paper aims to demonstrate how my empirical work bridges theory and practice pointing at challenges in terms of knowledge, competences and pedagogy. References(Maximum 5)Byram, M. (2008).
