N2 - What is described as the defining feature of pedagogues’ professional expertise in recent Danish research? This question is addressed in Chapter 3, which undertakes a comprehensive analysis of 26 Danish research articles spanning from 2004 to 2019, focusing on delineating the contours of professional expertise among pedagogues. The primary aim was to systematically synthesize insights into how the professional acumen of pedagogues is depicted in contemporary Danish research. The chapter delineates two principal findings: Firstly, the examined literature underscores the professional expertise of pedagogues as intricately intertwined with the prevailing structural, economic and political dynamics within the welfare state context. Secondly, it illuminates the ethical underpinnings of pedagogical expertise, highlighting a duality between the imperative to uphold individuals’ autonomy and dignity, and the parallel imperative to foster communal values, norms and cultural integration. Consequently, the professional prowess of pedagogues is construed as a nuanced capacity to navigate and reconcile these ethical imperatives within the fluid and complex landscape of practical pedagogical contexts, which are inevitably shaped by evolving societal exigencies and circumstances.
