    Abstract

This chapter addresses how young learners can experience aspects of their own life-world through data modelling and hence gain new insights through informal statistical reasoning. A teaching experiment was conducted in a Danish third grade (aged 9–10) classroom where students performed all parts of the data modelling process. Video recordings were made and transcribed. This paper presents empirical data showing examples of statistical reasoning. It includes posing questions relevant to data modelling, reasoning about how to structure data and reasoning about how the data modelling process sheds new light on the chosen topic. Finally, it discusses how students’ experiences can be potential for their Allgemeinbildung.
