Abstract
The chapter unfolds the potentials of a Cultural Studies approach to interculturality in ELT in a Danish teacher education context. Using Cultural Studies analyses as resources for student engagement in broader intercultural issues such as celebrity, identity, gender and sexuality have the potential to empower students to take a critical stance and to develop language skills to support this stance. This is exemplified by local examples taken from an ELT module (10 ECTS) in intercultural competence. The examples demonstrate that a Cultural Studies approach to interculturality provides students with a beginning metalanguage for language and culture analyses as well as pedagogical tools to qualify existing teaching material; however, to succeed with broader understandings of interculturality in language teaching, new teaching material must be developed.
