Abstract
This paper explores intergenerational ethics in the light of altered understandings of progress and time with the awareness of impending ecological crisis.
Since the end of World War II, intergenerational relations in Scandinavian societies have been framed by modernist expectations of ongoing progress, certainty and welfare. Today, while the everyday lives of most children in the Scandinavian welfare states remain relatively secure, the awareness of impending climatic and ecological crisis gives rise to growing parental concern about the uncertainty of their children’s futures. This paper explores parents’ practical and emotional reactions to the assumed existential and material threats of ecological crisis in the political context of the Danish welfare state. We discuss how changing future horizons frame adult struggles with conflicting notions of “the good childhood” and everyday moralities of parenting.
