Abstract

Time, space and the social intersect in the political framings and daily negotiations of the meaning of diversity, as illustrated in the term, mobility. Mobility refers not only to the increasingly global character of childhoods, but also to the time/space dimension of learning and development, e.g. as a move from undesirable to desirable social positions (social or cultural mobility) . ‘Mobility’, in this sense, not only refers to migration or an aim of social advancement, but also encompasses a hierarchization of social and cultural spaces.
The symposium examines how diversity and mobility is understood and dealt with in the politics and practices of preschool, more specifically, what conditions for participation that are offered for children and families, and how these are negotiated.
