Emerging multicultural and multilingual educator professionalism

Research output: Contribution to conference without a publisher/journalAbstractResearchpeer-review

Abstract

Educational policies in the Nordic countries contain complex and contradictory understandings of multiculturalism and multilingualism, pointing to conflicting understandings of children, language, culture, education, and educators. We have previously (Lundqvist, Thingstrup & Åkerblom 2025) argued that these policies present monocultural and multilingual frames for educators’ professional practices and professional understandings.
This presentation investigates how pre-service educators (teachers, pre-school teachers and pedagogues) experience possibilities, challenges and dilemmas when working with multilingualism and multiculturalism in their professional practice, and how this shapes the development of their professionalism and professional identity.
