Abstract

In medical science, diagnostic methods are validated and evaluated using certain diagnostic performance parameters such as accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value,1, 2 see Box 1. In the presence of a reference method, these performance characteristics can easily be calculated to evaluate the performance of a new method. Such performance characteristics are also widely used for comparing one method with another method or to evaluate the performance of a methodology, for example, through comparative analysis such as systematical review or meta-analysis.3
