Subjectivity and symbolic boundaries in the city and the mobility of youth

In the prolitical discourse the Capital of Denmark is described as a social divided city with areas of the city as so-called disadvantage areas. The paper discus how knowledge of youth experiences of repression in their everyday life in these areas can be qualified and challenges through qualitative studies of subjectivities and social inequality in the city. The paper investigate how youth in a after school facility in a local area in Copenhagen understand spaces of the city as safe or unsafe. The distiction between those categories are at the same time connected to the political discourse. The Study draws on ethnographic interviews with youth and professionals and the paper discuss how the youth experiences of boudaries, repression and mobility are used by the professionals in the afterschool facility. Theoretically, the paper is inspired of concepts from; Michéle Lamont and Beverly Skeggs in the analysis of subjectivities and symbolic boundaries and of Anja Jørgensen and Löic Wacquant in the understanding of place, belonging and the social division of spaces.
