Abstract
“Negative social control” and “honour-based conflicts” are the official terms in Denmark for the coercive control of women and young people in ethnic minority families motivated by a code of honour. In this article, we critically examine these terms and suggest the concept of “honour-based social control” to describe the phenomenon. The aim is to develop a theoretical framework in order to understand the phenomenon of honour-based social control and to provide analytical tools to practitioners who are confronted with the phenomenon in their work. The theoretical framework includes concepts such as violence against women, culture, honour culture, habitus, patriarchal connectivity and intimate citizenship.
